A former sewing factory in the heart of Soho NY gets converted into a residential building, wide floor plates, high ceilings and wide floor plates define this Loft in the top floor of a Historic Soho Cast Iron Building.
The renovation includes the full redesign of the living floor, a bulkhead extension and renovation of the rooftop terrace. The main floor is defined by an organic “gallery corridor” extending to engage the spiral stair defining the open “loft” living spaces to the more private sleeping area. The Gallery extends vertically to connect with the rooftop extension and expand the space to the exterior, bringing light by the opening of a double height atrium at the stair and introduction of a skylight.
The overall material palette of the apartment celebrates the industrial quality of the history of the space, introducing large planks of oak wood floors, blackened still and brass which are soften by plaster and corrugated walls. Color is celebrated by the introduction of natural stones which play an important role defining the overall space.
The rooftop extension, is meant to create a very simple geometry extending form the interior, its metal black cladding contracts against the heaving vegetation proposed for the roof garden and the whimsical checkered pool.
