The Collector’s loft is a complete renovation of a pre-war loft building located in the heart of Soho’s Cast Iron Historic District.
The building, built in 1903, presents a phenomenon characteristic of various buildings belonging to the district in Soho, New York, where two buildings form a cohesive unit, stretching between Mercer Street and Broadway.
To preserve the original characteristics of the space and the expansive barrel vaulted ceilings, program is inserted as spatial volumes to create syncopating bands of open and enclosed space. The bands of open space are designated as areas of display for the client’s art collection, while the semi-enclosed volumes house varying programs and increase in privacy as the spaces move towards the Broadway-adjacent end of the loft.
On the south end of the loft is an expansive 28 foot window. Enclosed space was cleared from the surrounding areas of the window to allow for it to fall within the largest open area of the loft. The building heights to the south reach several floors below, allowing for double exposure to a spectacular view of downtown Manhattan.
